Former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Hines Ward was held at gunpoint by police in Los Angeles on Thursday in a mix-up over a car mistakenly reported stolen, officials said.
Ward, currently a contestant on hit ABC show "Dancing with the Stars," was riding in a Honda Civic driven by an unidentified woman who owns the car, Los Angeles police Sergeant Maria Morrison said.
The woman had reported the car stolen when a restaurant valet could not find it, and then after it was located she forgot to cancel the police report, police said.
Early on Thursday morning, officers in a patrol car pulled over the Honda Civic, and they held Ward and the woman at gunpoint and handcuffed them while they sorted out the situation, Morrison said.
When officers determined the car was not stolen, they released Ward and the woman at the scene.
Ward briefly addressed the incident in a post on his Facebook page.
"I want everyone to know that this was a complete misunderstanding," he wrote. "The police were just doing their job. Apologies were made and it's now in the past."
On this season's "Dancing with the Stars," Ward is paired with professional dancer Kym Johnson, and the couple is one of five pairs still in the running to take the crown.
Ward is a wide receiver for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, and is their all-time leader in career catches. He was named the most valuable player of Super Bowl XL in 2006.
