MANILA, Philippines - Senators asserted on Thursday that the war against corruption in the military will not end with the death of former Armed Forces chief Angelo Reyes.
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, himself a former soldier, said it is still the mission of lawmakers to pinpoint who benefitted from the military anomalies.
"Masyado malaki ho kasi ang perang involved. Malacañang lang nag re-release ng ganung level," he said.
Just a few weeks ago, Trillanes named Reyes as the alleged protector or "padrino" of former Armed Forces comptroller Carlos Garcia, who allegedly amassed over P300 million in ill-gotten wealth while in active service.
Trillanes, however, believes it was impossible that only Reyes was to blame.
"Even in the admission of the late general through his emissary sa akin, he admitted na may mga transaksyon na galing sa taas na dumadaan sa kanya,” he said. “If General Garcia got this much, then definitely those higher than him got more."
Trillanes said the Senate may invite former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to its investigation.
He admitted, however, that he has nothing solid to link Arroyo to the military corruption scandal.
Some senators, meanwhile, are being criticized for being hostile and abrasive toward witnesses and resource persons.
Senators, however, said there is no need to apologize for doing their jobs.
"I'm not prepared to apologize to anybody. So I think if there are lapses done by other members, let the public judge them and let the media chastise them," said Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
“Mula’t-mula naman, palagi akong malumanay sa pagtatanong ko dahil sa liit ng katawan ko, baka pag hinamon ako ng away magulpi lang ako,” Senator Francis Escudero said.
