Jericho Rosales wears his heart on his sleeve in pre-Valentine concert

MANILA, Philippines – He is no Erik Santos, Christian Bautista or Jed Madela, but when Jericho Rosales sings, he does so with heart as shown in his solo concert, “And I Love Her,” held on Feb. 11.

But first, on other aspects of the show: By adding a lot of variety through injecting theatrics, video presentations and backstage footages to his well-chosen songs for his set, Echo delivered a solid show despite some technical glitches. Jericho co-directed his concert with Paolo Valenciano and it felt that every detail was well-thought-of, including the stylish old school stage and the diverse music arrangements.

His 21-song set, which opened with Elvis Presley’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” ranged from old-time classics such as “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” “Fixing A Broken Heart” and “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That),” to more recent hits “Misery” and “Just The Way You Are,” and to theme songs of soap operas he starred in (some of which paired him with ex-girlfriends). We particularly enjoyed Jericho’s performance of Rey Valera’s “Naaalala Ka,” as well as his The Beatles’ set, which he performed with the Children’s Joy Foundation. He even danced a little tango in “And I Love Her.”

As a performer, Jericho has his own brand of suave, charming especially the ladies in the audience (who gamely shrieked during his numbers), and some of his moves are quite reminiscent of Gary Valenciano’s.

But what really defined his concert is Jericho’s downright honesty.

In between his song numbers, Jericho interacted with the audience, asking questions like, “Guys, how do you handle rejection?” and “Sino ang single dito?” He also told stories between songs, and some were even confessional, if not controversial.

In introducing his seventh song, “If I Ain’t Got You,” Jericho said: “Feeling niyo 'pag artista, 'di valid ‘yung mga emotions 'di ba? Yes we have the fame, we have money… [But] we also get sad, really. ‘Yun ‘yung mga times na wala kaming partner.”

Jericho acknowledged that as a public figure, his life is an open book, though he sometimes still wishes that he could keep his personal life away from the limelight. It is public knowledge that Jericho has had relationships with actresses Angelika dela Cruz, Cindy Kurleto, Kristine Hermosa and Heart Evangelista.

Kung nag-fail man ‘yung karamihan ng mga relationships ko, I can say that tunay naman akong nagmahal. And minahal din naman ako ng tunay,” he said.

Jericho also performed songs that he said reflected how he grieves. In “Ngayong Gabi,” which Jericho penned several years back, he related, “Tungkol ito sa isang lalaking iniwan nang walang dahilan.” (For whom could it be?)

He sang another composition, “Pusong Ligaw,” which is said to be dedicated to Kristine.

After his performance, he apologized for getting carried away. (We’re just not sure if it’s about his performance or his confessions.)

A number of Jericho’s friends in the industry came to watch the concert, such as Alessandra de Rossi, her elder sister Assunta, Smokey Manaloto, "Green Rose" director Manny Palo, Dominic Ochoa, Gary Valenciano, and his most recent ex-girlfriend, Cesca Litton, who intently watched and took photos of Echo’s performances.

During his “thank you” portion, Jericho greeted Cesca, which elicited teasing from the audience.

Of this, he quipped, “Huli na kayo sa balita. Friends na kami.”

The “Showbiz News Ngayon” segment host, however, was not among the 12 women to whom Jericho handed out red roses while performing “Beautiful In My Eyes.”

Jericho delivered a touching supposed finale (he granted fervent requests for an encore) with his revelation of his “very, very special guest:” his mother, Rose.

This is my mother Rose and I love her!” he exclaimed after their duet of “Ikaw,” the theme of Jericho’s previous teleserye with Kristine, “Dahil May Isang Ikaw.”

In other happenings, the trailer for his first international feature film “Subject: I Love You,” was also shown during his Feb. 11 concert. The film, directed by fellow Filipino Francis dela Torre, also stars Kristin Bauer (“True Blood”), Briana Evigan (“Step Up 2: The Streets”), Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark”), Fil-Am Black Eyed Peas member Apl De Ap, and Gary Valenciano in a cameo role.

Subject: I Love You” was filmed in 2008, and might be shown this year both here and abroad, as Gary told Bulletin Entertainment in an interview after Jericho’s concert.
