Islamabad, Pakistan -- Four people were killed Thursday when gunmen opened fire on a bus of Shiite Muslims in northwest Pakistan, a government official told CNN.
Saad Ali said the bus was traveling to Peshawar when it was ambushed in what he said was likely a sectarian attack. One person was injured in the shooting, which happened near the city of Alizai, in Pakistan's tribal region.
Later, a voluntary anti-Taliban resistance militia cornered the purported assailants in nearby Lakazai, government official Waseem Khan said. A gunfight broke out and three members of the resistance militia died, Khan said.
The road on which the bus attack took place had only recently reopened. It was shut down last year for security reasons due to a series of similar attacks on both Shiite and Sunni Muslims.
