MANILA, Philippines - Suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels ambushed a group of Army scout rangers escorting a military truck that was supposed to provide transportation assistance to passengers stranded by a transport strike in Albay province, this morning.
A radio report said that the military personnel were cruising along a road in Guinabatan town, when they were ambushed by at least 30 heavily-armed rebels.
Members of the Philippine Army's 7th Scout Ranger Coy were able to fight back at the rebels. Three of the soldiers were hurt and rushed to the nearest hospital.
The report said that the soldiers were escorting a military truck that was supposed to be deployed in Guinabatan's town proper to fetch stranded passengers.
Several passengers were stranded in Albay province due to a transport strike by jeepney drivers and operators. The strike was conducted in protest against the series of oil price hikes in the country.
Similar protests were also being held in parts of Metro Manila.
