Pound-for-pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao congratulated new middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for his majority decision against Sebastian Zbik last Sunday.
In an official statement posted in his website, Pacquiao said that “I want to congratulate Julio on a well-deserved victory.”
“I believe he needed the 12th round to win this fight, and his heart pulled him through.”
Pacquiao and Chavez Jr. are both trained by Freddie Roach.
“I believe Julio is going to be one of the most exciting fighters in the sport of boxing in the future,” Pacquiao said.
The fighting congressman offered some analysis of Chavez’s fight, saying, “Julio landed great body shots and this really helped his victory. This is what made the difference in the fight.”
At the same time, Pacquiao gave the 25-year-old fighter some advice.
“Julio needs to work on his foot work and his defense,” Pacquiao said. “His legs and hands need to become coordinated with each other and he needs to learn how to deliver a knock out blow at a short distance.
“Julio needs to get technically better.”
Pacquiao said that he would like to see Chavez Jr. fight Miguel Cotto in his next match, but warns that Cotto will hit harder than Zbik.
He added that he admired Chavez’s father very much.
“His father was the person I watched when I was growing up. (Chavez Sr.) was very exciting. He was my favorite fighter growing up,” said Pacquiao.
‘Pacman’ also congratulated Top Rank, Roach, and conditioning trainer Alex Ariza for the victory.
