Scotty McCreery wins 'American Idol'

North Carolina-based singer Scotty McCreery on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) emerged as the newest American Idol, defeating Lauren Alaina in the 10th season of the show.

The 17-year old singer, who has a distinct low-ranged voice, burst into tears after AI host Ryan Seacrest declared him as the winner at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

"Never in my wildest dreams. I got to thank the Lord first. He got me here," the former grocery store clerk told Reuters.

The finale garnered more than 122 million votes across the United States. American Idol Season 10's total votes since its premiere reached nearly 730 million.

The two-hour-star-studded finale of the show included performances of American artists Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Judas Priest, Tony Bennett, Tim Mc Graw, Jack Black, TLC, Gladys Knight, Edge, Bono and former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

AI's new judges Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith lead vocalist Steven Taylor also gave stellar performances.

McCreery's win marked the fourth straight year that a male contestant has won the competition.

As the new "American Idol," McCreery wins a record contract with a Universal Music Group record label.

American Idol Season 10 finalists include Filipina-American singer Thia Megia, Casey Abrams, Jacob Lusk, Ashthon Jones, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscana, James Durbin, Haley Reinhart, Stefano Langone, Karen Rodriguez and Naima Adedapo. -With a report from Reuters
