Barangay Ginebra clung on to dear life as it fought with great determination and stopped Talk n Text, 100-93, in Game Five of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup title playoff Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Kings imposed their game, keeping the Texters from running and, thus, gaining a chance to win the game at the finish.
"That's conscious effort. Yun ang pagasa namin para talunin sila," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.
“We only had four fastbreak points. Namasyal yata sa Luneta ang mga players ko,” rued Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.
Ginebra stopped Talk n Text on its tracks, cutting down the Texters’ series lead to 3-2.
“We stayed alive but it’s just hard to look far forward. We got the job done tonight and we’ll try to get the job done again Sunday,” said Uichico.
“Nothing to celebrate about. It’s just a game, and we’ll face another uphill climb Sunday. We’ll again try our best to stay alive,” Uichico added.
Nate Brumfield dished out a near triple-double job with the other Ginebra starters – Mark Caguioa, Rudy Hatfield, JC Intal and Mike Cortez – adding double-digit outputs as the Kings forced a Game Six in the series.
Reyes said the big difference in Game Five was Brumfield eating Paul Harris alive.
He also mentioned the Ginebra wingmen outclassing their Talk n Text counterparts.
“Hopefully, we’re able to recover and come back with better effort. We’re a mediocre team kung maglalaro walang effort and energy,” said Reyes.
“The good thing is that we lead the series. We still have a chance to close it out in the next game,” Reyes added.
Cheered on by their loyal followers, the Kings played tough all night and survived a second do-or-die game in the conference. They earlier won a KO match versus Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals.
Brumfield came through with 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists as against Harris’ 15 points and five rebounds.
Caguioa logged 20 points, eight assists and four rebounds, Hatfield contributed 12 points and nine rebounds while Cortez and Intal chipped in 10 points each.
These Ginebra players stayed fresh throughout, and beat out the Texters in the payoff period.
Ginebra sealed the win as Cortez banged away a trey after a crucial Talk n Text error making it 98-90 entering the final minute of the contest.
The Texters were still close behind at 90-95 before committing three straight turnovers, enabling the Kings pull away at the finish.
Talk n Text dictated the tempo most of the opening half but Ginebra hung on, surging ahead, 39-38, at the half on a 5-0 closing run by Rob Labagala and Brumfield. (SB)
