MANILA, Philippines — Despite being down 2-1 in the series, an online poll conducted via the Manila Bulletin website and popular social networking site Facebook showed that avid PBA fans still pick the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings to win the 2011 PBA Commissioner’s Cup crown.
As per the Manila Bulletin online poll, 63% picked Ginebra to win the 2011 PBA Commissioner’s Cup crown while 37% picked Talk ’N Text. Over at Facebook, 80% voted for the Gin Kings while 20% went for TNT.
Clearly the underdog of the two teams, Ginebra does have its work cut out. Unless they get more local support from the likes of Ronald Tubid, Eric Menk and Rudy Hatfield, TNT may as well be expected to romp off with the crown.
As far as TNT is concerned, the choice of the fans is not something new. In the Philippine Cup, majority picked the San Miguel Beermen to win the title but the Texters still came out on top although this time, they bring enriched championship experience and are getting added help from reinforcement Paul Harris.
The pro-Ginebra backing is to be expected. The Gin Kings had to work hard to get where they are now.
They had to play 3 gruelling games against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the quarterfinals and 4 games to upend the gritty Smart Gilas squad. With barely enough time to rest and help key players to recuperate, the Kings are certainly up for a battle against the mighty Tropang Texters.
To appease their fans, the Gin Kings need more players to step up. Mark Caguioa and import Nate Brumfield cannot do it alone.
In game 2, Ginebra got a big lift when rookies John Wilson and Rob Labagala helped out their team’s cause. Erik Menk likewise played a splendid game for the Kings.
