Activity at restive Taal Volcano in Batangas intensified anew as at least 17 volcanic quakes were recorded in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Tuesday.>
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said at least three of the quakes were felt at Intensity III in areas near the volcano.

Three of the volcanic quakes occurred at 6:35 a.m., 6:35 a.m., and 11:25 p.m. Monday and were all felt at Intensity III by residents of Pira-piraso, Tibag, Tuoran and Calauit located in the northeast and southeast sectors of the volcano island, Phivolcs said in its Tuesday update.

It added that the felt quakes were reportedly accompanied by rumbling sounds.

Also, water temperature at the Main Crater Lake increased from 30.5 to 31.5 degrees Celsius.

Phivolcs maintained Alert Level 2 is still in effect over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface.

It advised the public the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate.

Also, it said the entire volcano island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

9 quakes at Bulusan

Meanwhile in Sorsogon, Phivolcs said at least nine volcanic earthquakes were recorded during the past 24 hours, along with wispy to weak steaming at the northwest and southeast vents.

The steaming reached about 50 meters before drifting west-southwest, it added.

Phivolcs said Bulusan Volcano’s status remains at Alert Level 1, meaning the source of activity is hydrothermal and shallow.

But it said entry to the 4-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited, since the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions.

It also said that due to the prevailing wind direction, residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ashfalls.

Also, Phivolcs said people living near valleys and river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall.

3 quakes at Mayon

In Albay, Phivolcs recorded at least three volcanic quakes in the last 24 hours, along with weak to moderate white steaming drifting northwest.

Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, with Phivolcs recommending that the public not enter the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano. — RSJ, GMA News
