Sid Lucero, torn between two networks

Sid Lucero may be all smiles these days, having a pretty good run with his career, with recent double nominations at the 8th Golden Screen Awards and a new endorsement for Great Teaste Trio as well. He also recently scored a part in GMA-7’s upcoming series, “Amaya.”

I’m so glad to be back in GMA,” he tells Bulletin Entertainment in an exclusive interview. “But at the same time…” His voice trails off, as a wistful smile plays on his lips. “I grew up in ABS-CBN eh. They helped build ‘Sid Lucero.’ Even though they never really gave me a contract with the network, they gave me projects, projects, projects… So that’s the sad part. It’s like, my loyalty sana is…” He lets the thought hang briefly before adding, “But we did ask permission… not to exit. Parang leave lang, like a vacation… I just wanted to do this one. And if ever may offer, I’m coming back.”

For “Amaya,” the very talented actor will be working with Marian Rivera. “They called me in to do this reading, which is also an audition… and a screen test with Marian, which I was kinda nervous about because I don’t really know her. My brother does so I did my homework and talked to him about it… What can I expect…

Although admitting nervousness about this project, Sid’s reputation as an actor, nevertheless, has been set solid with him already earning a number of accolades—which includes a 2008 Best Actor win at the Gawad Urian Awards, a Best Actor nod at the 2008 Thessaloniki Film Festival, and a best actor nomination in the International Emmy World Television Festival Awards, among others.

Like I’ve always said, for me, the nominations say, ‘Hey, you’re doing your job, good job, keep it up,’ parang ganun. The Emmys naman, more than anything… I wasn’t there as [me]. I was there as a Pinoy—the proudest Pinoy ever, siguro. Feeling ko ako si Pacquaio eh! I was really out there with the entire country. Actually I’m excited nga about this year, I’m wondering who’s next eh. Kasi, ‘di ba, the year before it was Angel Locsin?

He also adds, “It basically says na [despite] the time constraints and the budget constraints, we do have what it takes to make it big outside our country. There’s, what, are 33 countries, 700 judges, and they chose the show and at the same time one of the actors… we ARE getting noticed. That’s how I came to the conclusion nga na, with a little more budget, a little more time, we can conquer the industry our way…”

Personally, though, he believes, “I’m only as good as my co-actors. They were giving praise to the character of Red, the character I played… But Red wouldn’t have been Red if it wasn’t for Jericho [Rosales], if it wasn’t for Kristine [Hermosa], if it wasn’t for Ms. LT [Lorna Tolentino]… it if wasn’t for them. Kasi one missing piece and everything changes eh. So it could have been any of us.”

Candidly, though, one of the highlights of Sid’s New York experience was stargazing with his younger cousin, the daughter of Cherie Gil. “She enjoyed so much,” Sid exclaims, adding, “We even shook the hands of… Simon Cowell. My cousin was like… ‘Oh my God, is that him?’ [Sid motions swigging a drink] ‘Let’s go!’ [and acts out introducing themselves to the former “American Idol” judge].”

Prior to “Amaya,” though, Sid will be seen as the new endorser of Great Taste Trio. Expressing a bit of shock about the whole campaign being built around him, Sid shares, “I’ve had experience making commercials before, so I thought it was just gonna be one of those commercials…. All of a sudden I was being briefed about what was gonna happen [during the launch] and that’s when I started to get nervous. But yeah, it feels really good [to be part of this].

Recalling his TVC shoot, “The first day was rough for me because I came from the shoot… so I was kinda tired. I had my caffeine dose… and after a while [my energy] picked up again.” Although he had been paranoid that he was holding up the shoot at that time, the result was an impressive TVC directed by Sid Maderazo, which captured the cool but laid back, down-to-earth side of Sid Lucero.

According to the brand manager, Janina Dizon, “Sid was a natural choice for our brand… He’s young and leads an active life with his acting career and different hobbies.” She also noted that Sid’s dynamic personality also makes him the perfect face for Great Taste Trio, which in itself provides the right mix of coffee, sugar and creamer.

Although a “third-generation scion” of the Eigenmann acting family, as he’s been described, Sid’s reaction to all this attention is, “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it… because it’s not my thing.” But he says this with a charming smile.

I love my job,” Sid grins. “It becomes a job sometimes… but this time, it’s just fun.”
