Smart Gilas Pilipinas mangled a hapless San Miguel Beer squad to stay unbeaten and temporarily grab the solo lead in the PBA Commissioners Cup with a 109-68 win over at the Arena in San Juan.
Aside from a league-leading 4-0 start, the Smart Gilas Pilipinas squad moved them closer to an outright playoff spot.
As usual, Smart Gilas was led by Filipino naturalization candidate Marcus Douthit with 17 points. He drew great support from Andy Barroca and Dylan Ababou who also made 17 points apiece. Marcio Lassiter added 16 points.
The loss dropped the struggling Beermen to a 1-3 card. Thus far, San Miguel has not gotten much leverage from the acquisition of Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra in that celebrated SMB-Air21 trade.
Danny Young, playing in his second game, could only contribute 15 points in his second outing for the Beermen.
