Smart Gilas joined the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters atop the PBA Commissioner Cup standings when they held off a gritty Air21 Express team by hacking out a 102-99 victory at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
The Express had a last chance to send the game in overtime but Jay-R Reyes final attempt in the last 2.7 seconds came up short.
Marcus Douthit once again came up with a monster performance by delivering 30 points. He was backed up by Marcio Lassiter with 22 points.
The game got interesting in the final seconds when new recruit Dondon Hontiveros was fouled by Chris Tiu when he was attempting a three pointer in the last 9.7 seconds of the game.
Hontiveros missed the first, made the second and intentionally missed the final attempt. Danny Seigle followed up the miss to make it a 100-99 count.
Seldom-used Dylan Ababou was fouled with 2.7 seconds but calmly sank both free throws and the final count.
