Packers reward coach McCarthy with new multi-year contract

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy has been rewarded for his Super Bowl triumph with a multi-year contract extension, the NFL team said on Friday.

The Packers, who beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in last month's Super Bowl for their first title in 14 years, did not disclose terms of the deal beyond calling it a "multi-year" contract.

"We are very pleased to finalize this agreement with Mike," Packers General Manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. "He's a good football coach, a good leader and a good man."

McCarthy had two years remaining on his current contract and the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel said the extension was for three more years.

McCarthy has been in charge of the Packers for the past five seasons and joined Vince Lombardi and Mike Holmgren as the only coaches to win a Super Bowl with the team.

"We were very excited to bring the Lombardi Trophy back home this past season, and we look forward to the challenge of continuing to improve as a football team and adding to the championship legacy here," said McCarthy.

Born in Pittsburgh, the 47-year-old McCarthy previously worked in coordinator roles with the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.
