When it was time for “Glee” to write its own songs, originals produced same smashing results.

Columbia Records announced March 17 the cast’s first-ever new and original songs, the upbeat “Loser Like Me” and Rachel Berry’s ballad “Get It Right,” debuted No. 1 and No. 2 on iTunes download sales. Another original, Amber Riley’s “Hell To The No” landed No. 8 on the countdown.

Wednesday’s “Glee” episode “Original Song” scored six of the top 10 tracks occupying iTunes Top Songs chart. The hit-dictating TV serial also took comfortable slots with covers with the following: P!nk’s “Raise Your Glass” (performed by the Warblers during Regionals) at No. 3, The Beatles’ “Blackbird” (by Chris Colfer) at No. 5, and Maroon 5’s “Misery” at No. 6 which was performed in the show by Filipino-American cast member Darren Criss.

During the episode however, local airing via ETC cut the kissing scene between Criss’ and Colfer’s characters Blaine and Kurt.

Back on chart news, “Glee” recently celebrated its biggest earning week with seven iTunes Top Songs chart when download totaled 880,000.

Album-wise, “Glee: The Music, Volume 5” currently ranks third on Billboard’s Top 200 with almost 90,000 sold unexpectedly topping new records from R.E.M. and Avril Lavigne. The said “Glee” album includes recent covers of reigning Grammy Song of the Year, Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” along with Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Justin Bieber’s “Baby.”

When the Fox hit series returned from Christmas break 2010 with the mashup impression of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll” as main attraction, 26.8 million viewers set a new ratings high for the show.

Favorable reviews about “Glee’s” first crack at original songs continue to pour in as of this writing. Screencrave.com wrote: “‘Glee’ provides us with the first episode to include original songs, and the result is overwhelmingly great music-wise.”

The review also praised “Get It Right” to be a “tearjerker that’s heartbreakingly beautiful” and “Loser Like Me.
