GBP to promote Donaire's next fight

Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), the Oscar De La Hoya-owned company that took Filipino-American sensation Nonito Donaire away from archrival Top Rank, is determined to pursue a May 28 show headlined by their prized acquisition.

GBP Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer told on-line edition of The Ring magazine that finding an ideal opponent for somebody like Donaire won’t pose any problems.

“Basically, when you have one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world, you’re never going to run out of potential opponents,” Schaefer, who is De La Hoya’s right-hand man, told ace scribe Michael Rosenthal.

Plan is to showcase Donaire in front of his many adoring fans in the San Francisco Bay Area but GBP has yet to name his foe and the venue of Donaire’s much-awaited return following his breath-taking second round demolition of Fernando Montiel of Mexico last month.

Donaire told Filipino reporters early this week that “the May 28 date is an HBO date (and not a Top Rank date).”

Donaire, said to be the heir apparent to Manny Pacquiao, left Top Rank for an alleged breach of contract by Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.

Arum has denied Donaire’s claims that his outfit was guilty of mishandling its promotional obligations and that he will try his best to keep the fighter under his fold with the help of high-end lawyers Daniel Petrocelli and David Marosso.

Schaefer said GBP’s legal team, also as imposing as Top Rank’s, is taking the cudgels for Donaire.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Daily News, Schaefer said: “We are happy to have Nonito and we have big plans for him. As it relates to the legal issues, I’m not going to comment on that.”
