LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Dennis Rodman and Tex Winter, two key figures in Chicago's run of six NBA titles in eight years, were named 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame finalists on Friday but Reggie Miller was snubbed.
Miller, who spent his entire 18-year NBA career with the Indiana Pacers, did not appear on the ballots of seven of nine members from a nominating committee that selected 12 finalists for the honor.
He averaged 18.2 points a game and was known as a 3-point sharpshooter but he could not crack the top 12 among contenders in his first year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame.
Finalists must be chosen by 18 members of a 24-person panel to be chosen for induction into the sporting shrine at Springfield, Massachusetts. The Hall of Fame inductees will be revealed April 3 and enshrined in August.
Rodman won two NBA titles with the Detroit Pistons and three more with the Chicago Bulls during Michael Jordan's epic 1990s championship dynasty.
Winter originated the triangle offensive scheme that Jordan worked to perfection with the Bulls, a system Winter brought with him under coach Phil Jackson from Chicago to the Los Angeles Lakers that has helped them win five NBA titles and twice finish as runner-up in the past 11 NBA seasons.
Chris Mullin, a member of the 1992 US Olympic gold medal "Dream Team", and Jamaal Wilkes, who won four NBA crowns with Golden State and the Lakers, were also among the nominees.
Other finalists were Golden State vice president and former star player Al Attles, former NBA coach Dick Motta, college coaches Tara VanDerveer and Herb Magee, college referee Hank Nichols, five-time US Olympian Teresa Edwards and retired NBA standouts Ralph Sampson and Maurice Cheeks.
