PBA: Alaska seeks redemption in Commissioner’s Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Alaska Milk, winner of last season’s Fiesta Cup, is optimistic of putting up an impressive show in the coming 2011 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The Aces are eager to plunge back into action, determined to redeem themselves from a poor sixth-place finish in the last Philippine Cup.

We look refreshed. We’re playing fresh-minded which is not the way we played last conference,” said Alaska coach Tim Cone.

What import Larry Demetrius Williams has been showing in practice makes the Aces a lot more excited in the Commissioner’s Cup which opens with a road game in Laoag City Friday pitting Barangay Ginebra and Meralco Bolts.

The Aces open their own campaign versus the Powerade Tigers on Feb. 23 at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Our import seems a good fit so far. We are pleased,” said Cone.

I’m sorry to see Eddie Basden go. He was a real pro. But fans are going to love LD. He has incredible hops,” Cone added.

Basden was Alaska’s original choice but measured above the 6-foot-4 height limit.

Larry’s better than just a lucky charm. Larry is simply just good. His teams win because he contributes mightily. I love him,” said Cone.

It’s hard not to love Williams who’s considered as among Wake Forest’s best players of all time. It’s the same school attended by San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan.

Williams was a four-year starter, ending his Wake Forest stint in 2010 ranked fifth in all-time career starts with 118.

The Yadkinville, North Carolina native served as team captain for three years and distinguished himself as the only player in Wake Forest history to earn multiple ACC All-Defensive Team awards, earning the honor in 2009 and 2010.

He finished with 1,005 career points and 136 career steals – No. 11 in all-time Wake Forest list.

He’s a high leaper as he showed in placing fourth in the 2010 College Slam Dunk Contest.

Cone is hopeful the Aces would have good chemistry with Williams and the team would figure prominently in the fight for the Commissioner’s Cup championship.
