MANILA, Philippines — Barangay Ginebra and newcomer Meralco headline the opening of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup when they clash on Feb. 18 at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena (INCA) in Laoag City.
All teams will be reinforced by imports not taller than 6-foot-4, and the Kings will have Nate Brumfield while the Bolts will be led by onetime NCAA Slam Dunk champion Tony Danridge.
The tournament will have nine regular members following the disbandment of Barako Bull whose place has been taken temporarily by the Smart Gilas national team which is using the tournament as a tune up for its foreign campaigns.
The PBA will take a break on Feb. 20, Sunday, and will resume action on Feb. 23, Wednesday at the Astrodome in Pasay City when Powerade meet Alaska while B-Meg Derby Ace battles Rain or Shine.
Powerade will have import Russel Carter, while the Aces took LD Williams, a replacement for Eddie Basden who flunked the height measurement. Williams last played for Springfield Armor in the NBA D-League.
As for the imports of the Elasto Painters and Llamados, they will have Hassan Adams and Rob Brown, respectively.
On Feb. 25 (Friday) at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City, Philippine Cup champion Talk ’N Text will start its bid for back-to-back titles with import Paul Harris against the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas, while Air21 will face all-Filipino conference runner-up San Miguel Beer.
