MANILA, Philippines – Efren "Bata" Reyes, the Philippines’ most popular billiards player, posted his second straight victory in the World 8-Ball Pool Championship 2011 by beating fellow Filipino Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo at the Fujairah Exhibition Center in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday.
"Sana mahawakan ko ang momentum," said Reyes, who scored a 7-5 victory over Orcollo in their group stage play.
Reyes, who has won several world pool titles, remains unbeaten in the 8-Ball tournament.
The 56-year-old billiard legend will next face another compatriot, Antonio "Nickoy" Lining.
Lining, for his part, outpointed Jepthant Palencia, 7-2, in Group 3.
"Medyo pumapanig ang bola," said Lining, who hails from Oriental Mindoro.
Filipinos Ronato "Volcano" Alcano and Lee Vann "The Slayer" Corteza also won their respective matches.
Alcano from Calamba, Laguna edged Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego, 7-4, in Group 7 while Corteza from Davao City crushed Mehdi Rasheki, 7-3, in Group 10.
Alcano will go up against Basher Hussain. Corteza’s next assignment will be Thomas Engert.
Other Pinoy players were not as lucky.
Francisco "Django" Bustamante, the reigning World 9-ball champion suffered his second straight loss this time to David Alcaide, 7-3. Venancio Tanio also lost to Mika Immonen, 7-4.
