Aquino: Cardinal Sin journeyed the path of peace; urges citizens to do the same

MANILA, Philippines (PNA) -- As the nation marked the 25th anniversary of the world-famous 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, President Benigno S. Aquino III urged the Filipino people on Friday to continue the journey in the path of peace.

He made the call at the unveiling of the statue of the late Manila Archbishop Jaime L. Cardinal Sin near the corner of Bonifacio Drive and Fr. Jose Burgos Avenue in Rizal Park, Manila.

The President cited the path that Cardinal Sin had journeyed, "which is the path of peace," in the same way his parents -- the late former Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon "Cory" C. Aquino -- had chosen.

He stressed that the heroism exemplified by Cardinal Sin should be emulated by the people through a journey in a straight path towards achieving peace and freedom.

He said that the fight for peace and freedom will not stop as long as there is poverty and oppression.

The Chief Executive noted that democracy was completely restored in the country 21 years after the start of the Marcos regime on December 30, 1965; 14 years after the declaration of martial law on September 21, 1972, and two-and-a-half years after the assassination of his father, former Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. on August 21, 1983.

The President was assisted during the unveiling rites by Vice President Jejomar Binay, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, apostolic nuncio Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, Antipolo Bishop Gabriel Reyes, Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani, and Dr. Ramon Sin, brother of the late cardinal.

President Aquino, joined by the vice president, the archbishops and bishops, also released doves into the air as a sign of peace.

Among the others present during the rites were the Aquino sisters and their families, other members of the Sin family, Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes, former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr., Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., former Ambassador Howard Dee, and Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson.

Earlier, the President offered flowers before the statues of his late parents in the same place.
