This seems to be the case in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as majority of the most popular teams and players in terms of merchandise sold are also the ones who made it to this year's playoffs.
Eight out of the top 10 teams in merchandise sales reached this year's post-season while the top 9 players in terms of jersey sales are all members of teams in the playoffs.
Based on the global sales of NBAstore.com and the NBA Store in New York City, the back-to-back defending champion Los Angeles Lakers have once again sold the most number of team merchandise.
This marks the 8th time in the last 9 years that the Lakers have topped merchandise sales. The Lakers were followed by the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls, respectively.
The Oklahoma City Thunder ranked 7th followed by the San Antonio Spurs in 8th place and the Orlando Magic in 9th position. The LA Clippers (6th) and the Phoenix Suns (10th) were the only teams in the top ten not in the playoffs.
King James dethrones Kobe
In player jerseys sold, LeBron James of the Miami Heat dethroned Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers for the top spot. Bryant, whose number 24 jersey was the top seller the previous two years, settled for 2nd place.
Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics came in a surprising 3rd followed by Ama're Stoudemire of New York in 4th and MVP favorite Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls in 5th.
James' teammate Dwyane Wade ranked 6th while the NBA's top individual scorer Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder ended up in 7th place.
Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and rookie John Wall of the Washington Wizards round out the top 10.
